Supplementation, the simplest sense of the word, is the means to supply or fill-in the gaps left by lack of sources of nutrients and one of these is what people refer to as blue green algae supplements. When it comes to heart disease, the generally agreed way to lower its risk is by lowering unhealthy cholesterol levels. Blue green algae is known to have what you call a hypocholesterolemic effect – it helps reduce unhealthy cholesterol levels in the blood. One study highlights the use of blue green algae supplementation with up to 15% by weight of diet significantly improved plasma lipid profiles of hyperlipidemic rats and mice fed a high-fat/high-cholesterol diet or a high-fructose diet.

Reduces inflammation risk
Consuming blue green algae has been shown to boost immunity and protect against inflammatory diseases such as arthritis, colitis, and allergic rhinitis in both animal and human studies. One study highlights the beneficial properties of taking blue green algae supplement for inflammation. 
“Oral administration of Spirulina fusiformis (800 mg/kg/b.wt) significantly altered these above physical and biochemical changes observed in arthritic animals to near normal conditions. Hence results of this study clearly indicate that Spirulina fusiformis has promising anti-inflammatory activity against adjuvant-induced arthritic animals.”
